Seat belts: the position matters as much as the belt

A seat belt does its work through the bones of the body — the hips and the collarbone — not through soft tissue. In a sudden stop, the lap belt should catch the pelvis, which is strong enough to take the load. When it rides up across the abdomen instead, that force lands somewhere it was never meant to.

For expectant mothers this stops being a technicality. Guidance is consistent across road safety authorities: keep wearing the seat belt throughout pregnancy, and place the lap portion low, under the belly and across the hips, with the shoulder strap running between the breasts and to the side of the bump.

The difficulty is that a belt does not always stay where you put it. That is the entire job of a seat belt adjuster — it holds the lap portion down where it belongs so it cannot creep upward as you drive. It does not replace the seat belt or change how the restraint system works. It keeps the belt in the position the manufacturer designed it for.

Bleeding control: the gap before the ambulance

Severe bleeding is one of the few emergencies where the clock runs faster than help can arrive. A serious arterial bleed can become life-threatening in a handful of minutes — well inside the time an ambulance needs to reach you, especially outside a city.

That gap is why bleeding control kit belongs in a car rather than a cupboard. Direct pressure is the first and most important response, and it works. Hemostatic gauze makes that pressure more effective: kaolin is an inert mineral that accelerates the body's own clotting cascade where the gauze meets the wound. It adds nothing the body doesn't already do — it just helps it happen faster.

It is a first aid dressing, not a treatment. You still call 000, you still keep pressure on, and you still go to hospital. What it buys you is time, and in a bleed, time is the whole thing.

Comfort counts as safety too

Fatigue and discomfort are not separate problems from safety. A driver in pain shifts position, loses concentration and stops early or pushes on when they shouldn't. Back support and warmth on a long stretch of road are not luxuries — they keep attention where it needs to be.
